Why stone stains
Natural stone has pores.
Granite, marble, limestone and travertine have tiny pores that can absorb water, oil and grease. If spills are left to soak in, they can cause staining.
Acid sensitivity
Some stones react to acids.
Marble, limestone, travertine and some granites can be etched (dulled) by everyday acidic items — vinegar, bleach, lemon and lime, wine, cola, tomato sauce, cordials and citrus-based dish detergents.
Preventive measures
Do's and don'ts.
Recommended
- Recommended impregnation sealers should be applied on natural stones — every two to three years, or as needed.
- Wipe up spills as soon as possible with a dry cotton cloth.
- For regular cleaning of polished surfaces, use only water and a cotton cloth.
- Now and then, use a neutral pH stone cleaner.
Avoid
- Harsh acidic or alkaline cleaners, including those with ammonia or bleach.
- Abrasive scrubbing pads and powders.
- Placing hot pots and pans directly on the stone — use trivets, mats or heat pads.
- Cutting directly on the stone with knives or sharp objects.
- Leaning, sitting or standing on benchtops, especially near joins or cut-outs, as this can cause cracks.
Maintenance
Looking after your stone.
Sealing
Recommended impregnation sealers should be applied on natural stones. They soak into the pores and make the surface more resistant to water, oil and grease. They do not protect against acid etching. Use a food-safe sealer on a clean, dry surface while wearing gloves, leave it for at least 30 minutes, then wipe clean.
Daily care
Clean with water and a gentle neutral pH cleaner on a soft cloth, then wipe dry to avoid streaks.
If something goes wrong
Don't try harsh fixes yourself. Call us for professional help and we'll advise the best way to restore your stone.
Porcelain, sintered stone and mineral surfaces
Modern porcelain and sintered stones are non-porous and generally don't need sealing. For these and for zero crystalline silica mineral surfaces, clean with warm water and a mild neutral cleaner, and follow the care guide that comes with your surface.
